Hi Susan. Yes, I have experience with GIS in this
regard (with Oracle).
If you have GIS I cannot understand why you would want
to write
scripts or programs to retrieve/insert data into a
table since GIS has an ODBC/JDBC facility to do this
built into its mapper.
Why would you want to add to the
complexity/heterogenity of your system by adding
scripts on top GIS when it is unnecessary?
My advice: do everthing in GIS, except when you
cannot do otherwise (which is very rare in my
experience)
