VMI can mean many things, do you have business requirements? Does anyone know
what the customer wants or needs?

We won't be purchasing a product to do this for us. It will be in house.
We use sterling gentran on the 400 for all EDI trans, all the coding for the
vmi database and mapping will be done by me.

The other thing to ask is "Can we buy some COTS product to do this for us?"
Implementing VMI is a job of work. If you were able to drop something in
like Manugistics (as an example) to handle it for you it might be a lot of
help. This would drive your EDI requirements for the 852 as well.

Karen:
Take a step back and forget about the EDI here. How would you do this
without EDI? I think you are on the right track here. Are your products
seasonal? Is past sales a good indication of future sales trends? Do you
need to manage the inventory down to the store level (ie different stores
may sell different amounts), what are your lead times to ship or produce
your product? How is your current sales forecasting system being fed? I
would think the 852 has the movement data that it needs. Someone in your
organization does this manually now, I would be sure to pick their brain.
Is your plan to automatically send an 855 to the customer when you determine
they need product?

Subject: [EDI-L] VMI question
We are going to do our first 852 and begin managing a customers inventory.
I will need not only to accept the 852, but to create a VMI system on our
400. I have been reading about Vendor Managed Inventory, and
studying/planning BEFORE I begin the coding, so I don't end up 99% complete
but having neglected a huge piece for this system and having to start over.
In the vendor managed inventory systems, once I set up and load the original
file from the vendor that gives me their
Upc cross reference with our items..
The minimum stock desired.
The maximum stock desired.
Date of last order.
Re-order inventory point.
And I will be receiving from them the current committed to sell, the
quantities sold...should I keep those for future reference, or just
calculate the quantity on hand bottom line to use.
Do any of you who have created one of these vendor managed systems (rpg
iseries here) have any suggestions for what information to retain
permanently from the 852 trans? Does our forecasting for them come into
play here? If so, we would have to keep track of sales trends per
orders....
Just kinda thinkin' out loud here.... any input or suggestions would be
appreciated... we are JUST at the very beginning here...
