i'm in the (very) current process of bringing up a new 856 program, and will attempt to use the one-size-fits-all model. if they don't want use the extra segments that other customers asked for, then they can ignore them. and i'm really going to try to deliver a full asn if i can. in the pharma biz there is a movement for "pedigree" information ... and the 856 seems to be the delivery method of choice. the pharma biz is not as mature an industry as, for instance, the chain retailers. some of the customers who do full edi can only send 850s and receive 997. 810s are "next year." for once i'm taking the wal mart attitude and designing a full-featured document, and will attempt to always serve that burger with cheeze. stay tuned to see how it all turns out!
