Given the syntax note saying that If AK901 contains the value "A" or "E", then the transmitted functional group is accepted. I've always thought that meant that if the group has any "A" or "E" codes in any AK501, You can't use an "R" in AK901. If ALL AK501s in the group are "A" or "E", you go with the "A" in AK901. And if one or more (but not all) AK501s have a code other than "A" or "E", you go with the "P" in AK901.

ANSI 004010 Transaction Set 997 Functional Acknowledgment Segment AK9, Functional Group Response Trailer Element One, Functional Group Acknowledge code My standards disk tells me code "P" (Partially Accepted) means "at least one transaction set was rejected." If ALL transaction sets in the functional group identified in AK1 segment are rejected (i.e., AK904=0), should AK901 be "P" (partially accepted) or should it be "R" (rejected) ? That is, if "P" means "at least one transaction set was accepted," does it also imply that "at least one transaction set was (A)ccepted or accepted with (E)rrors?"
