I've done similar things with Gentran NT Server years ago. Gentran doesn't
do that, per se, but if you apply some creativity and some external
utilities many things are possible. What gentran does is allow you to map
to whatever sort of layout you like, which would be your report layout, and
it allows you to export that anywhere you are able and name it however you
like. It will also schedule executables to run on a schedule or triggered
by the presence of a file in a particular place. The possibilities abound.
For instance, I used to map an 820 to a report layout and save it with a
.xls extension in a folder for accounting to view it. We also had a folder
where I could drop any file with certain mail format headers in the first
3-4 lines and a utility program would come along, read the mail headers and
send an email with that content. With a combination of application macros
that run automatically and batch files kicked off by the scheduler in
gentran, its do-able. Not always pretty, but functional. I am not sure if
Adobe has macro functionality like that. Its been 4-5 years since I owned a
full copy of the program with all the good toys.
Currently I have gentran NT kick off script files that execute some
interesting stuff but we also have GIS so we use that for emails and PDF's.
I'm sure your client's Sterling rep will love to sell them GIS on that
basis! ;-) That conversion could keep you gainfully employed for years!
