I am responding to someone who thought they were responding to the whole group but responded only to me.
Here is my response: 1st off, flame away! I say this because I don't have a problem helping someone ANYWHERE, regardless of outsourcing, if they are willing to put in some effort to at least get a clue about the process. THAT'S my point. I will help someone new to EDI if they take the time to at least get an idea of what they are doing. But when someone just says "give me everything I need" then I say no way. 2nd, disregard? I don't think so. If this person was from Boston I would have said the exact same thing. If I lose my job to outsourcing again, so be it. That's the reality of these times. I don't have to like it though. But if I lose my job to outsourcing to people who didn't bother to put in the work, that's just bull. ----- Original Message ---- From: Jonathan Garniss <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, December 7, 2006 10:12:24 AM Subject: Re: [EDI-L] Regarding 856 OK I am only doing this because I need more coffee and the coffee machine is broken, but I am getting tired of this type of email. I busted my butt for 17 years learning transaction sets, translators, application interfaces, tools, programming languages, business processes, etc.. Now I see people on this group just asking for everything without doing any of the work. "... send me sample map for 856 transaction." First off, specify inbound or outbound. Second, specify for whom and what version. Most importantly, however, get trained on EDI yourself. I'm sorry, but having been outsourced a few years ago I am getting sick and tired of people simply saying I am new and need you all to do the grunt work for me because I am a cheap consultant thrown into a job with zero training because we are trying to undercut everyone who actually has the experience. I didn't have sample maps available at the time without contacting the manufacturer of the software on their support line and requesting them. Even then I would not be able to get them sometimes. So what did I do? I TOOK THE TIME TO FIGURE IT OUT. Were the companies that I worked for too cheap to pay for training Mostly yes. So I took it upon myself to learn. And while I can see why requesting a sample could be considered trying to find a way to learn, I am interpreting this as "I can't meet my deadline unless someone does the work for me and I tweak it". It's one thing to take the time to learn, figure out questions, and ask them. It's another just to expect helpful courteous people (like the vast majority of people here in this group) to do the work for you. I don't begrudge people new to EDI asking questions. But, as I have seen far too often, someone saying "send me everything I need" is not asking questions.
