Assuming you have minimal expertise in SQL Server, the first thing I
would do would be to shut down Gentran and perform some basic dbms
maintenance. For example, shut down SQLServer and make sure the
database files are defragged. If you can find a way to monitor
real-time what SQLServer is doing (I know you can with Oracle, but I've
not done it with SQLServer) you could see which queries or operations it
is executing and see if your database might benefit from some additional
indexes. These could be added for your housecleaning then later dropped
without doing any damage.
The NT admin manuals (at least in one of the volumes) has descriptions
of the database tables. With a bit of effort you could probably figure
out which tables and rows could be cleaned up with SQL. However, going
this route you'll need to be careful about depdendencies, i.e.,
violating foreign key constraints or ending up with orphan records.
