We use SAP XI and Seeburger as a translator. Native SAP XI is not that good a fit for EDI as it doesn't do acknowledgements, envelope processing, control numbers, ... There is an adaptor for flat file management that will allow you to do EDI in XI but be prepared to do a lot of extra development to get it there. Seeburger have an XI adapter which fills these gaps if you are interested. The XI mapping tool is also a little klunky and needs some more work by SAP.
