The 271 in HIPAA-land is the Health Benefit Insurance Eligibility Response used to respond to a 270 inquiry. The 277 in HIPAA-land is the Claim Status Response used to respond to a 276 Claim Status. Organizations that are required to comply with the HIPAA Administrative Simplification requirements must use the HIPAA-named X12N implementation guides for these and other administrative simplification transactions as set forth in the HIPAA Electronic Transaction Final Rule from many years ago. I do not know Gentran for Unix but this has got to be possible, since I know Gentran users send 810+856 to the same ISA partners all the time, as well as receiving 850, 830 and 860.
