The only comment I would add is that if you do EDI with Europe or Asia then the 
prevalent standard is EDIFACT not X12.

  The trend is 100% AS2, either direct to customer or to a van. Some customers 
have their own
  AS2, others prefer not to bother with it. This way, all of your traffic comes 
and goes the same way.

  X12 is the prevalent standard, only because it's been around a long time and 
people know how to use it. And the mechanisms and methodologies to moving X12 
messages are pretty well settled. For example, you can't just start to send a 
proprietary xml document to Sterling ... they don't know how to deal with it.

  The leading software these says seems to be Sterling - either unix server, nt 
server or GIS. There are some other good ones out there, depending on your 
platform (unstated) and price point.

  What you should do is get someone (smarter than you) to come in and poke 
around and write a strategy and plan for you. An outsider will give a more 
objective opinion than an insider with an agenda.
