Mike,

I'll rephrase my question:
in version >004020 ISA_11 is the repetition separator.
before this, what was its purpose?
what value can I expect before 004020

at the moment, I can read and write X12.
my translator handles edifact, flat file, CSV etc
X12 does look a lot like edifact.
So my questions are not so much about trying to find out how x12
works, but about getting clear the differences between X12 and
edifact, and fitting this into the x12-specific part of my translator.

at the moment my translator can not handle repeating elements; as far
as I can see repeating elements are not or not widly used.
