I've tried to respond to some of your replies, but my responses
haven't shown up. In fact, some of the replies I read are no longer
visible.
I agree that some form of validation is required. The translator
does it all the time, anyway. I'm saying that EDI should not "do the
math" in place of the application.
In this case, we're sending 210's that are manually entered.
Sometimes, the line item & accessorial charges do not add up to the
given total. Since ALL of this (charges & totals) is being passed to
me from the application, I wasn't checking the math. Now, if I were
only getting the charges, of course I could calculate the total. No
biggie. But since I was getting both (charges & totals) I
incorrectly assumed they were right.
My contention is that EDI should not "do the math" for 2 reasons:
1. What the TP gets may not match what's on our system. The
accounting department would then love me (more) for creating
discrepancies for them to resolve.
2. SOX (Need I say more?)
Naturally, my recourse is to fail the translation and notify the data
owners. This means I'll be seeing lots more of the acct mgr., who
already hates to see me coming. But I tell her, "I'm like a
fireman. When you see me, it means your house is burning." She says
EDI stands for Every Day Inconvenience. Of course, having your
mistakes become someone else's problem is a nice convenience to have.
Unfortunately, I've been doing EDI since the old days, when it was
little more than "format & forward". So I kinda expect the
application data passed to EDI to be accurate. Obviously, I'll have
to adjust that notion, but I just can't go back on "Change No Data"
Thanks to all for you coments/ideas.
