Paul - and Paul? Anyway - I use Inovis TrustedLink i-Series for My EDI translation system and I use the InovisWorks network/VAN services. We transmit to InovisWorks using a form of AS2 which is secure http. It's within the TLi system and we use the "IP Exchange" module.
We have a firewall set up as well, and this was the way to go. But using some kind of secure FTP or HTTP or similar is probably your best bet. Just My 2 bits....
