John, In a quick look at X12 I found paragraph 3.3.2:
3.3.2 Extended Character Set An extended character set may be used by agreement between communicating parties and includes the lowercase letters, other special characters, national characters and select language characters. It looks here like the answer is a qualified maybe. For certain the translator should not prevent you from sending the characters. Of course, if you are interfacing through EBCDIC, you are limited in the characters by the encoding. My current client uses Oracle and GIS, and is experiencing these kinds of issues right now for their European customers. Supposedly GIS can be configured to handle it. We are waiting on advice from the purported experts. Are they acceptable within the 'standards'? I have worked with half a dozen or so EDI translators and have always had trouble in accepting these characters. For the most part they cannot process these characters and will return 'bad EDI' error. As a rule, I've always insisted that my partners avoid sending these characters within a transactions, namely in product descriptions or address lines and I've also ensured that I don't send any out either. Many ERP's can't handle these accents either. Not sending any simply keeps thing simple on both ends. So are they allowed or not? Thanks.
