I think one of the problems these days is the solution sellers. They craft a package that saves the buyer money or has new features to win a deal but they ignore the impact on the supply base. It is well known that using the buyer as the "Big Stick" leverage to force suppliers to change is the easiest way to get supplier adoption.
If the solution company can show ROI for the suppliers not just the buyer it's a no brainer for all parties involved. Buyers should be asessing impact on their supply base before they maker any major changes. That cool new visibility report might have a hidden price tag within the supply chain. In the end if you force your supply base to make a change and the only benefit is for you as the hub the suppliers will end up billing you back for their costs and your true savings are reduced or eliminated. Well, depends. A couple of years ago two major healthcare plans teamed up and engaged me to create a piece of desktop software to create a remittance report from the X12N X091A1 835 Healthcare remittance advice document.. software normally the responsibility of the recipient. They then GAVE copies of the software to their providers.... and simultaneously gave all providers a url, a user ID and a password to pick up '835' documents ....AND stopped producing and mailing printed remittance reports. They paid me less (a lot less!) than the $500,000 per year they now save on paper and postage. So, I guess it depends what's in it for the 'vendor,' huh? Michael C. Mattias Tal Systems Inc.
