Hi, We did a similar exercise of cost analysis of converting some of our maps from Gentran Mainframe to Mercator (Now IBM Datastage). I have not given the estimated hours of each of the cost component below as this varies based on other factors. It was a very expensive exercise and given below are some of the cost componenets. I heard that (even though I have not seen in person) that there is a tool available to convert maps from Gentran mainframe to Gentran Integration Suite. But there was no tool available in our case to migrate to IBM Datastage Tx. a) Migration of map into your new translator & Unit testing - Depending upon the complexity b) Integration testing with your EDI trading partners - Very high risk is involved. c) Re-configuration of your existing applications to send and receive data. (Back end work). This depends on how flexible is your back end applications. Some back end mainframe applications require extensive coding and modification. d) Changes in API. Application Interface format. Are you planning to change the application interface format. Many companies attempt to change from COBOL COPYBOOK structures to XML based API. e) Communication changes. We attempted to change from FTP to IBM MQ Series. This adds cost to migration. f) Training your current development team, Business Analyst team for the new tool and SLDC processes. g) Redevelopment of any additional utility tools. As simple as EDI 997 reconcilliations. Some of the translators do not have these. GENTRAN provide such EDI based functionalities out of the box. In addition to the above high level migration charges, we need to think of investment in license cost of the new tool, server charges (Remember you are migrating from Mainframe to distributed platform). This will introduce in-stability and performance issues that you need to work and should be concerned about. Thanks and Regards. Siva Raja. Hibiz Solutions.
