I wanted to take a moment and weigh in on the discussion about Global
Data Synchronization (GDS) and the EDI 832 and to take this
opportunity to provide some additional information, to this group,
about Global Data Synchronization, the GDSN, data pools and loading
options.
The GDSN is the network of interoperable service providers known as
data pools. The GDSN works based on AS2 communications, XML data
structures and a standardized message choreography.
Similar to EDI, end users subscribe to the services of the data pool
of their choice, and are able to communicate with trading partners
using other data pools through the GDSN. However, unlike EDI, there
is one other entity that helps control the network and that is called
the GS1 Global Registry®. The GS1 Global Registry® acts as a
directory on the network that ensures interoperability between the
data pools, and also routes subscription requests from retailers to
suppliers.
>From the GDSN perspective, a data pool's primary role is to
communicate with the other data pools on the network and to ensure
compliance with the GS1 System standards for both data formats as well
as communications. In addition to this, a data pool will often develop
proprietary or ancillary (value-added) services that are strictly
available to customers engaged with them. Examples of these services
would be expanded (EDI 832) loading options, service provider
partnerships, and the Big Hammer Marketing Data Pool.
CGS Datapool Services from Commport Communications is a GDSN-certified
data pool and is the only GDSN-certified data pool in Canada. As both
an EDI VAN and a GDSN-certified data pool, Commport has developed
routines to enable our customers to use multiple data formats to
populate our data pool and as a part of our EDI service can perform
in-line data validations of EDI transactions against the data held in
the data pool.
1Sync has chosen to go to market with partners who are responsible for
providing loading and other services directly to end users. Using
their ECCnet platform for access to the GDSN, GS1 Canada has become
one such service provider for 1Sync. With a different value-added
proposition, Big Hammer has developed a proprietary suite of marketing
data attributes that they refer to as the Big Hammer Marketing Data
Pool. Big Hammer's Marketing Data Pool provides supplemental data to
retailers, which is not a part of the GDSN such as supplier-provided
marketing copy.
As a part of our educational campaign, Commport offers periodic, free
webinars that go into detail about how the GDSN works and addresses
the many benefits of GDS. If anyone is interested in the schedule of
these webinars please let me know and I will make that information
available.
