Rather than favor any particular poster with a reply, I figured I'd go back to the start of this little brouhaha. Nothing personal, Matt.
We all have really strong opinions on things. I think it's about once a quarter I have to remind people why we're here and not on the old UCOP servers any more. For the newbies, it's because the majority of the group decided that the UCOP listserv admin's abridging our right to discuss our feelings about the 9-11 attack were not acceptable to them, and they would have to go somewhere where they could govern themselves. Sort of like what we did with those thirteen colonies way Back In The Day. So off-topic speech is a hot button for the mods, well at least for this moderator; and I think I can speak for Rich Druckenmiller when I say that there are not many topics that we want to moderate. Ad hominem attacks, of course, are off limits, as are blatantly racial comments. We really don't like it when you tease the newbies or the "PLEASE SEND ME AN EDI!!!!!1" folks and we all know how Rich and I like to deal with spammers. (cue the sound of the slide on Mister Twelve.) However, this thread; though it seems to be polarizing the group in a couple of different ways; doesn't seem to me to be all that different than the original 9-11 thread. Matt has already amplified his comment regarding the "dark skin tones" and it's obvious by the comments here that some people are very disapproving of the AZ law and others are very much in favor of it. So, having rehashed the entire thing, what's your Friendly Moderator going to do affirmatively about this thread? Nothing. We are all adults. We can, and do, moderate ourselves. I think this thread will die down of its own accord, and letting it expire also keeps me from being the heavy by putting someone on moderated status. :) I have a little story to relate, however. I'm on LinkedIn, as many of you are. And most of what's on LinkedIn is my professional 'persona' as we find this a useful tool to make sure that we stay in touch with the group of us that call ourselves "EDI professionals." There are other sites where I'm not so professional. I try and keep a strict demarcation between the professional "me" and the "off duty me" and, for the most part, I'm successful. Not that I'm embarrassed about what I stand for and what I believe, but generally it's not germane to who I am here. And I would hate to think that a hiring decision, or a promotion, or a chance to participate in some enterprise or another, could turn on whether or not I'm a Sean Hannity/Glenn Beck fan and a card carrying member of the Heritage Foundation, or not. For that and other reasons I keep the two dimensions of my life as separate as possible, and I ask that each of you - before responding to this already over-long and way off-topic thread - ask yourselves similarly, "Do I really care if someone knows this about me in a professional capacity, and is it more important that I make my feelings known in a very public forum?" If the answers are No and Yes, then have at it. But before you hit Send, remember what Phineas and Ferb said: "Fame is fleeting, but the Internet is forever." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Matt Brown Sent: Friday, July 16, 2010 9:41 AM To: EDL LIST Subject: RE: [EDI-L] <JOB> Axway Position in PHX with MFT/B2B experience Those with darker skin tones--please remember to bring your passport with you to AZ--or at least drive v-e-r-y carefully.
