Whether a company sends a CONTRL message or not is purely based upon the trading partner agreement.
I agree with Klaus regarding UN/EDIFACT syntax validation. We also see many code pair violations as well within UN/EDIFACT data. Steve, I agree with you that it makes good common sense for TP using UN/EDIFACT to use the CONTRL message. It maybe that the users are not familiar with the fact that the CONTRL message exists since it is not published within UN/EDIFACT message directory. It is published separately as part of the ISO 9735 Standards set at <http://www.gefeg.com/jswg/>. I also know that many EDI translators from European software companies don't support CONTRL and all features of version 3 and 4 of the syntax. BTW, if CONTRL were used there would be a lot of rejected exchanges. Many UN/EDIFACT users use the invalid syntax identifier (UNB/S001/0001) and character set combination, e.g. UNOA with Level B character set.
