Everyone,

This is a VERY interest thread and one that has taken a different route
than I'm
sure was probably intended as an innocent reference.

Was it right or wrong to make the original reference, I'm not here to make that
decision.  I agree with comments made on both sides.  But everyone is (or
should
be) aware, of the continuing, almost weekly occurrence, of another national
news
commentator, who is now relieved of their position because they said
something that offended someone somewhere and paid the price by losing their
job
by for they said, either off-handed or by voicing their own views.

I do agree with the following:

We live in a country where freedom of speech is one of our founding elements.
For the most part (and this is subject to a much greater debate than here), we
are free to do and say what we want, without government or other censorship.
Try doing or saying some of the things that are routinely stated in this
country, in Iran or China and watch how quickly you are wisked away, censored
or
worse, imprisoned and/or put to death.

Yes we should watch what we say in a public forum, whether here, our local
newspaper, national newspaper, radio, CNN, blog site or anywhere else.  As
evidenced in this small forum, even the most casual reference of 'teen sex' or
other potentially, emotional charged subjects, often have MAJOR implications
and
obviously can be construed in a number of ways, depending on EACH
viewer/reader's background, experience and sensitivities.

But perhaps the national and our personal sensitivities have now grown to the
point where 'freedom of speech' is not so free any more, in any form.  More
often, than not, when one's casual reference or statement is made in any sort
of
public forum, others will bring to bear their own experience and response that
can adverse to the intent of the original statement.  And if you don't think
saying the wrong thing (per my reference above to the national news figures) or
perhaps in some instances, even being in the wrong place, doesn't have major
ramifications, just review the case of Richard Jewell, in the case of the
Olympic Park Bombing in Atlanta.  Those allegations made front page news for
weeks, if not months afterwards.  He was cleared of the allegations, but there
not was much of an 'update' publically admited if at all.  But his life had
been
ruined and I'm sure that very incident had at least an indirect affect on why
he
died just 11 years later at just 44 years of age.

At the least, each of us must now and should take a step back and more fully
think before we offer even the most well intended euphemism or casual
(off-handed) comment before we post or state or write it in any public forum,
be
in spoken, written or even video taped.

And now as my boss regularly conveys, let's move on...

I have to agree with Mr. Frenkel that the
reference to teen sex really doesn't belong in
this type of forum. I understand the point Stan
was trying to make, and I know he wasn't trying
to "start something" by using that particular
analogy, but we all need to be mindful of the
fact that business etiquette expectations are the
same, regardless whether we are meeting face-to-face or online.

Picture a speaker making a comment about teen sex
(or any other controversial subject) in front of
a conference room filled with hundreds of men and
women representing a multitude of companies
across the world, and I'm sure many eyebrows
would have been raised. There might have even
been a "talking-to" after the meeting. We just
need to be sure we keep our conversations
professional, and limited to the types of
comments that would be acceptable in any business setting.
