I don't know your product specifically, but something you should consider if 
there is no intrinsic Gentran function to get the "nth" item of a delimited 
series  (in your case the comma is a delimiter, the first name is element 
one, the last name element two) .. is a "code exit."   (which I am certain 
is available).

Not the same product I know, but I use a code library I wrote for Mercator 
which has all kinds of these miscellaneous text and file manipulations 
(copy, append, delete, browse, log text, execute external, etc) because 
Mercator is not very strong in intrinsic support for these kinds of things.

I'd also talk to my partner about getting a bit more 'standard'  by asking 
him to send separate data items (last name, first name) in separate 
elements/subelements.

ANSI/EDIFACT EDI, much like a database, was designed to convey one fact = 
one element or subelement. When you start packing two facts into one element 
you are straying off the reservation.
