Now that I finished this other thing....

I know the "veterans" here know how the '846' is used in Real Life, but you
'newbies' might enjoy a little more detail.

I have one client who makes parts for the automotive aftermarket; he sells
to all the big chains, eg NAPA, Carquest, Autozone....

These competing retailers all offer their customers a "factory stock check"
when the local store is out of stock... they use an '846' my client sends -
once or twice per day, except in one case every 15 minutes - to update the
"factory availability" for parts counter personnel who can then give the
end customer (that would be you or me with a broken car!) the "good news"
that the part can be here tomorrow! (or not, I guess).

Another client of mine sends an '846' to a couple of major retailers to
support their "DOT-COM" operations and/or self-service in-store kiosks.

In both these cases the 846 is sent daily, the retailer keeps track of how
many have been ordered today; and the retail customer may order whatever is
left and have the items shipped directly to their home, knowing it will ship
today or tomorrow.

(I have always found "stories" like this a lot more informative than either
a page of code or a vendor's four-color brochure).
