I have one client who makes parts for the automotive aftermarket; he sells to all the big chains, eg NAPA, Carquest, Autozone.... These competing retailers all offer their customers a "factory stock check" when the local store is out of stock... they use an '846' my client sends - once or twice per day, except in one case every 15 minutes - to update the "factory availability" for parts counter personnel who can then give the end customer (that would be you or me with a broken car!) the "good news" that the part can be here tomorrow! (or not, I guess). Another client of mine sends an '846' to a couple of major retailers to support their "DOT-COM" operations and/or self-service in-store kiosks. In both these cases the 846 is sent daily, the retailer keeps track of how many have been ordered today; and the retail customer may order whatever is left and have the items shipped directly to their home, knowing it will ship today or tomorrow.
