I have a 6 month rule but I'd go for the most recent that's been out
for 6 months. I installed 5.2 (from 5.0) in June.

5.2 is not an upgrade, its a fresh install (at least it was in June).
I always do a fresh install anyway having experienced too much pain
from upgrading. I get a fresh db, fresh VM. install new system and
then import all my objects from production and run parallel as much as
possible for 2 weeks before taking down prod and putting the new
system in its place.
