Hi -
I agree with you that the analogy is not correct. SalesForce.com developed a new model for tracking potential customers, sales and sales programs. They also integrated this in a cloud-based platform. I took the partner training on Salesforce.com, and at that time - about 5 years ago, the integration processes were quite primitive. One either entered data via the good old manual data entry process, or used excel spreadsheets to upload or download. I imagine it has improved, but I was not impressed at the time. However, the ability to track and maintain a history with potential customers and programs was quite impressive. Keep in mind that companies do not often readily share their potential customer contacts with one another, so there was no need that I saw to perform B2B type activities. At that time, the product did not support order management, invoicing, etc. It is simply a sales tracking tool. There is a buzz about cloud-computing in Silicon Valley today, but with EDI/XML/B2B, any talk of "cloud" usage is just repackaging "outsourcing" with the new buzz word without any real process improvements. Here's the quote that's most striking: "Cloud-Based Integration Platforms Come of Age The market is at the right inflection point to massively adopt cloud-based integration. Much like SalesForce.com has built a platform for cloud-based applications in the CRM area, cloud-based integration platforms will emerge to support information exchanges between corporate ERP systems." I know this is GXS/Inovis is talking, and there is some real value in cloud, but massively adopt? I just don't see it.
