The transmitting EDI software issues these control numbers and increments them for each Interchange (electronic envelope), Group (a group of one document type in an interchange envelope) and document. The control#s are at the beginning and end of each envelope so the receiving EDI translator can confirm that the transmission is complete with nothing missing. Lastly, the receiving system keeps track of what control#s have been sent before to avoid processing duplicates.
