Interesting read. It reminds me of efforts in the EWG (or was it CEFACT by then, or someone else entirely?) to create something they called SIMPLE-EDI. It never took off. I doubt even in retail you could get the major retailers to all adopt the same IGs. Their IGs are different mostly because the back end systems are different and unless/until that changes I think they are unlikely to change their IGs. Besides, it works for them now, so why change?
A more fruitful strategy which many service providers are investigating or implementing is canonical transformation. Look it up under "Enterprise Integration Patterns" if you need more detail: http://www.eaipatterns.com/CanonicalDataModel.html By inserting a canonical format (often XML, but it could be anything) as an intermediate format in a two-step transformation the number of maps for both hub and spoke can be greatly reduced. And, you get this benefit without anyone changing their IGs or much of anything they're putting on or pulling from the wire now. Mike ----------------------------------------- Michael C.
