Interesting read. It reminds me of efforts in the EWG (or was it CEFACT 
by then, or someone else entirely?) to create something they called 
SIMPLE-EDI. It never took off. I doubt even in retail you could get the 
major retailers to all adopt the same IGs. Their IGs are different 
mostly because the back end systems are different and unless/until that 
changes I think they are unlikely to change their IGs. Besides, it works 
for them now, so why change?

A more fruitful strategy which many service providers are investigating 
or implementing is canonical transformation. Look it up under 
"Enterprise Integration Patterns" if you need more detail:

By inserting a canonical format (often XML, but it could be anything) as 
an intermediate format in a two-step transformation the number of maps 
for both hub and spoke can be greatly reduced. And, you get this benefit 
without anyone changing their IGs or much of anything they're putting on 
or pulling from the wire now.
