Maybe we should discuss what is the definition of a modern VAN?

Technology has advanced to a stage where we no longer require 3rd party
“store and forward” data switching services. In the beginning a VAN
was essential for secure connectivity. Any modern gateway application
can now provide secure reliable connectivity, data transformation with
non repudiation and audit trail.

I would agree EDI skills are a dying art, many companies outsource
mapping because they have lost the skilled internal resource.

Assuming outsourcing (cloud) for everything is a real trend, I would
ask;
If you look to outsource your B2B / EDI connectivity, trading partner /
community management (to include data transformation and some level of
business process / exception handling) is that 3rd party provider what
you consider to be a modern VAN?

Are all the companies providing these services as a Managed Service or
SaaS now considered to be a VAN as well?

At what point of operating your own Gateway to directly enable your
community do you become an in house VAN operator?

Best Regards,

If you guy's think VANS are obsolete, then you should do more home work.
this is not 1993 or 1994, the services that vans provide today are just
mind blowing. the one thing that's missing here and edi people. how many
people do you know that can really read a edi document anymore? How many
companies want to pay for great edi people? Were would someone learn
EDI? More companies today leading toward paying for hosting all there
EDI needs, this is a van service also. I not saying it not a good idea,
but it's not simple, it's not easy, it's not cheap and please find some
people that can at least read a ISA.

       Ken,

Nice article and I agree with your conclusion:

"My conclusion! Most VANs are obsolete! The current externally
configured VAN structure (big solutions, long contracts) is better
implemented as a Web Services API (Application Programming Interface).
That will give you the ability to call and connect to the World of
 Global EDI on your own!"

 Best regards,

 James

 Hi Phil

Thought a lot about it. So much that I wrote an article about it:

 Hi Group,
Has anybody had any experience in building your own VAN? I was always
 interested in that.

 Thanks,
 Phil
