There are a couple of data attributes in X12 which are not found in 
EDIFACT; you can have numeric fields with an implicit decimal point, and 
variable length fields can be specified with a minimum length. The 
codelists used are not the same if you were thinking of having ID codes 
in your internal message. I do not have enough detailed knowledge of X12 
to comment on field length incompatibilities.
