sure what is providing the ICMP echo - uEFI is not a multitasking platform

the above was tested without the Python interpreter running.
With Python running your test succeeds here - so let's see what is
different about our boxes.
I have been able to use Python sockets for quite a while now (half a year?)
but functionality is still limited so I'm not surprised if there are holes.
