I gave this info to the product team who maintains the UNDI driver. This was their response:
"I've tested diagnostics on 'Intel(R) 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection', but every try is successful (both with cable connected and disconnected, also on every speed - Auto Neg, 10 Mbps Half, 10 Mbps Full, 100 Mbps Half, 100 Mbps Full). The driver I used is 5.9.07 from Release 18.7. To check diagnostics I used "drvdiag" (both with -e and -s) command in EFI Shell (version 1.0). I've invoked drvdiag command at least 100 times, every time drvdiag returned "PASSED", so I don't know what might be the reason of below errors. Additionally I'll run a script verifying that with greater number of drvdiag invokes results are also PASSED and let you know about the results." If you have further feedback or issue reports for the Intel UNDI driver, please use the support forms on intel.com, since this driver is outside the scope of this mailing list. I downloaded the driver from http://www.intel.com/support/ethernetcomponents/controllers/82579/sb/CS-0322 39.htm The success rate of the diagnosis for GBE LAN 82579 is around 75%. The same software is used in the same way to test a Gbit Ethernet 82574L, with a 100% rate of success. The two devices are located on the same board. In the case of GBE LAN 82579, in 25% of the cases, the error returned by the Diagnosis Protocol implemented by UEFI Network Device Driver for IntelR Ethernet Network Connections" the is RETURN_DEVICE_ERROR (0x07). The same behavior (GBE LAN 82579 success rate ~= 75%, Gbit Ethernet 82574L success rate = 100% ) is observed on several machines with the same configuration. Does anybody has an idea about this strange behavior of the Driver Diagnostics Protocol implemented by the "UEFI Network Device Driver for IntelR Ethernet Network Connections" for the GBE LAN 82579?
