see what happens when i ... usually about once a year ... post a note
asking what value is there, if any, in classical statistical hypothesis
testing? the discussion runs amok ...
i love it!

and we wonder why STUDENTS have a difficult time in stat?

if we were to compile the dozens and dozens of responses ... and show them
to a sample of students who were just about to engage themselves in the
topic of 'significance' testing ... what do you think they would come away
with?

probably ... say WHAT???

somehow, and i don't what the 'some' nor the 'how' really is ... we need to
get our act together ... and convey some unified message ...

students are naiive Ss ... in the large experiment we call 'teaching them
stat' and ... our treatment seems not to be working too well ...

any ideas for new independent variables?

================
we conjur up a null
for all around to see
our hope usually to reject it
with chisquare, F or t
but let's say that we do
beyond our critical cv
so what? what has this told us?
told you ... and you ... and me
does the treatment work better?
if so, how much i ask
sometimes methinks this but
a futile impossible task
can our F help us?
can chisquare save the day?
or will we continue to enternity
thinking t will pave the way
to truth! to knowledge! satisfaction!
we've proved our theories now
but maybe all we've done
is invoke this sacred cash cow
we think there's magic in it
we think science needs it so
but all the posts ... from least to most
makes me wonder ... do we know?
to you i hope it's clear
proclaim for all to hear
on live t! and F!
and toss in chisquare too
but it seems such a drop in the bucket
just between me here and you
