Readers of the edstat e-mail list may have noticed a few responses to
messages they never saw. As listowner, I have been trying to reduce the
amount of spam and other irritants that go to the list. Messages
containing attachments (including html) and messages containing
character strings that I specify are sent to me for approval before
being sent to the list. This enables me to screen out dozens of
messages containing viruses and advertisements every week.

I have also exercised my prerogative as list owner to screen out
messages containing the string "HireAmericanCitizens" because I find
their messages offensive and off-topic. Messages from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] are sent to the newsgroup
sci.stat.edu, not to the edstat e-mail list. They appear in the
newsgroup, but I screen them out of the list. Responses to their
messages that do not contain the string "HireAmericanCitizens" are,
however, forwarded to the list.

It is possible that other discrepancies between the list and the
newsgroup will occur for the same reason. I'm not generally an advocate
of censorship, but there do seem to be fewer problems associated with
the list since we switched to new software that enables this limited
kind of moderation.
