we have normative grading ... grades based on a comparison of students with other students
criterion grading ... grades based on some comparison to a fixed standard
self referenced grading ... grades based on how well YOU do now compared to before
i am not advocating any one of these ... just pointing out that different folks may adopt one of the above and not the others ...
