i believe that most states ... or local school districts ... make selections of texts based on how well the texts will meet the needs of specific courses they teach ... but, this does not mean that the course IS what the textbook covers ... just that the textbook will do a good job of providing instructional material for students in those courses


sure, different states/communities ... will make text selections based on many things ... including presentation of controversial or sensitive material ... and while i don't think that too much censorship should occur, it appears to me that education is primarily a local matter and, that is within the local "rights" to make such decisions

that's why the imposition of national standards and mandates ... is next to impossible

and quite frankly, i am glad of that ... even though it does mean a wide variation in what education is all about across the country
