I am interested in doing some multivariate analyses of the Census's data set USA COUNTIES, a new edition of which, including 2000 data, is expected soon.
Here is my problem: I have a Mac and have been told that the COUNTIES CD requires a Windows machine. (I am not quite sure why, but apparently there is some manipulating software included that requires Windows.) I have thought of upgrading my OS to OS X, i.e. get a new machine, for which I could get software that emulates Windows. Then I would have to get the Windows version of SPSS, which may or may not run under the emulating program. On the other hand, I could just buy a second-had Windows machine, which would probably cost less ... Also, SPSS is quite expensive to buy. Is there anything less expensive ? I am interested in analyses that would include correlations, partial correlations, factor analysis of various sorts, and cluster analysis. Many thanks for whatever thoughts you can offer. . . ================================================================= Instructions for joining and leaving this list, remarks about the problem of INAPPROPRIATE MESSAGES, and archives are available at: . http://jse.stat.ncsu.edu/ . =================================================================
