The book that I used went into too much theoretical detail about the foundations
of various concepts in research, such as measurement and sampling theory, etc., and
had insufficient discussion of practical approaches. I want to give the students an understanding of the application of research design and methods, especially in relation to levels of evidence. The course addresses 1) the rationale, applicability, and limitations of commonly used research designs, 2) the issues and techniques of conducting empirical research, and 3) the skills necessary for critically evaluating research studies and the clinical literature. Therefore, I am not looking for an in-depth discussion of regression (although I do use Fox in a later course).

What are you hoping to accomplish with this course?
In depth discussion of regression? For this Cohen
& others, or Pedhauzer are popular choices.

A broad view of statistics? Then Hays, and another
that I cannot recall right now, are reasonable choices.

What is it about the recommended text that you do
not like? Any of those I've mentioned may have the
exact same problem as your current text.
