It sounds like you have a solution to the original problem. I would suggest also that you keep in mind that R. A. Fisher had very poor eyesight - the proverbial coke bottle lenses - and it was speculated (J. F. Box, "Life of a Scientist") that this drove his development of visulalized (imagined) objects, such as factor spaces in multiple dimensions. While he was not fully blind, I think there may be a parallel to your students' situation there.
