Hello once again Students of Engineering way back in India-Bangalore use *nix as part of their curriculum for subjects like Unix System Programming, C & C++ programming, Lex&Yacc, Network Programming Lab etc.
We guys at our college wanted to teach the others how to install *nix Os. Now showing actual installation of OS to the audience is not-feasible reason being the time taken for package installation, if a CD-IO error pops up ur InstallFest is doomed etc. By cutting a video putting it in a ppt we are able to pause and explain the various aspects of that installation. We also advice students to use vmware for installation so they dont have to bother themself with hardware issues. (Infact VMware machine with Opensolaris preinstalled could be a major help, just like they have one for Plan9.) Now from a students prespective (true for the majority of them ) any *nix OS that will install with minimum fuss, meets their curriculum needs is the best option. For a first timer i felt BeleniX (OpenSolaris LiveCD distro) is the best option. As desktop-OS students wouldnt replace their Windows-OS / Gnu/Linux distribution in favour for OpenSolaris. (I use FreeBSD and code in Perl and last time I tried Solaris10 things werent straighforward, besides after years of attachment no one would switch so easily). you wrote "Would it be alright if one of us contacted you in a few days to discuss your ideas and needs in some more depth?" I am in touch with Mr Sanjay from Sun Bangalore, and if there is any way you thing i can help the cause of OpenSolaris please let me know Ankur This message posted from opensolaris.org
