Hi David

Thanks for your response. It was the only one I received, which was
a bit disappointing to me. I know a fair bit about hardware and Windows,

but almost nothing about Linux. I believe that some virtual handholding
will be necessary for educators who want to set up an Edubuntu lab on
their own. IRC is not an easy option for me, partly because my employer
blocks it at work, but I will try again.

I had a bit of trouble getting the dial-up Internet connection to
work on Edubuntu with an old modem, but then the smp kernel installation
you suggested worked without a hitch. System Monitor now shows four
lines (why?) for the two processors. Which processors are covered by
the 686 kernel? Is it 64 bit or not?

When I initially installed the 64 bit Edubuntu on our new server,
all went well until I tried to boot a client. It complained that it
could not execute 64 bit code. I really have difficulty imagining a
use case where the *clients* are all 64 bit machines, at least for
a few years hence. When I mentioned it on the list, there was a
deafening silence, but fairly soon it was announced that the problem
was fixed in Dapper Flight 2. Maybe it was a known bug; I am not yet
adept at searching the bug list or filing a bug report. I expected
someone might just tell me what the situation was, and how to help
myself in future.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestion, which was spot-on for my smp
problem. I have not had an opportunity to see how much difference
it makes. It would be nice if smp worked OOB in Edubuntu.

When you open the System Monitor (Applications -> System Tools) look for

smp kernel)?

If not, have you installed the smp kernel (sudo aptitude install
linux-686-smp)?
