8.04 is simply more stable, so maybe better. Try to generate 32 bit client images for those clients. If you don't have any 64 bits clients, then, it's a lot easier.
Please, take a look here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=213043 They will perfectly be able to connect to any 64bit server. The processor has nothing to do with this matter, it's all about network communication. This is a very common problem. I hope you get it working now, if not, I'd need more information. Good luck!
