Note about hardware: I am trying to get it installed on a decTOP (AMD x86). The
'net posted instructions worked up to a point (I mastered the
install-from-stick, but ended up with a
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ prompt instead of an edubuntu screen.

sudo cat /etc/lsb-release
produces
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=6.06
DISTRIB_CODENAME=dapper
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS"

I tried sudu startx (as recommended by some other bulletin boards) but the
messages from STARTX are:
Series of:
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: cannot open deivce /dev/wacom
No such file or directory
Error opening /dev/wacom : Success
No core pointer

ends with:
Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices
XIO fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

So, I tried
sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults
and was told
update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/gdm: file doesn exist.
I checked the folder and sure enough... not there.

Finally, I re-installed from the stick again and avoided a couple of problems
with previous install:
1) had the ethernet cable plugged in, so networking is installed
2) used default partitioning
3) installed all the additional software packages when prompted
The LTSP package install step still fails, so I bypassed it - and from other
list postings, this seems to be a common bug. I don't plan to use this setup as
a thin client, so should not be a problem for me unless...there's something I
am missing.

So the process went better, except that I am still at the TTY1 prompt per my
last post.

help!
