Hello Gentlemen,

Just a short note.
Sun, IBM, and Novell are
all big commerical companies
that travel around promoting Open
Source software and have made lots
of money from O.S..

I understand Ian Lynch spends money out of his
pocket traveling around promoting OS/Open Office.
Isn't that the same as the big guys? I'm not
sure I can understand where there's a difference.

Well the big difference is aritmetically, when you spend you substract and when
you make you add. It is a big difference in todays economy.

I hope to make a living off Open Source/Open Office.
And I too plan to give back to the OS community when
and if I do. I have a friend that's on the Apache Software foundation. He
has made money with Apache from books, lectures, and the like. He also
gives his time to Apache to help promote the cause. I've found that the
idea of Open Source as been distorted over the years. I have been one of
those people that didn't understand at first.

I also know a lot of people who have make money teaching and trainning how to use a car even if they claim no copyright on the invention of any piece of an automobile.

Also know companies that work on the creation of marketing campaing and work for
companies that have no stakes on the creation of any of this products, like
resellers, supermarkets and restaurants.

The issue is that the idea of software as it is is distorted, OS is really
incredilby easy to understand. Nobody owns the software, like nobody can own
fruits of vegetables, you just harvest it and sell it. The person that buys it
can eat it or havest it again and have an apple tree to sell his own apples.

Ian and my buddy that works in Apache aren't laying claim to these
particular OS software products, there
lies the difference. If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me.

regards,
