Thank you to all of you who completed the payment provider survey. Based on
your responses, we have decided to change our plans for payment
integration. We had initially planned to move payment integration to a
plugin framework to allow for the development of various payment processor
integrations outside of the main edx/ecommerce repository. This would allow
any developer to create new integrations, and ensure we the maintainers of
the repository did not have to maintain accounts with multiple providers to
fully test payment integration.

Your responses have shown that almost everyone has integrated with Stripe
and PayPal. Moving to a plugin framework at this point would be premature.
Our energy would be better spent supporting a Stripe integration, and
improving our PayPal integration. We already have plans to update our
PayPal integration to use Braintree v.zero (rather than the PayPal API
which has not been as reliable as we'd like).

We welcome any contributions of a Stripe integration. A pull request from
our friends at OpenCraft <https://github.com/edx/ecommerce/pull/601> was
put on hold many months ago. If you'd like to contribute, please reply
saying so; and, we'll provide the support necessary to get the integration
merged.

If you have questions or concerns, please share them here. Thank you all
for your patience!

Thanks,
Clinton Blackburn, Tech Lead
