Open edX Community, We are beginning an initiative to upgrade edx-platform from its current Django 1.8.x version to Django 1.11.x. The Ginkgo edx-platform release will still use Django 1.8. However, the Hawthorn edx-platform release at the end of 2017 will use Django 1.11.
The main reason for the Django upgrade is to keep edx-platform continually on a supported Django version, which enables edx-platform to easily apply any security patches and bug fixes released by the Django project. The initial plan of action is detailed here: https://openedx.atlassian.net/wiki/display/PLAT/edx- platform+Django+1.11+Upgrade+Plan Normal edx-platform development can continue during the upgrade. However, it's possible that one or two times during the upgrade, we'll need to declare a short code freeze, meaning we'll halt merges to edx-platform master during these brief windows. In order to upgrade edx-platform, all its dependencies will also need to be Django 1.11-compatible. This work will take some time, which is why we're starting the work well before the deadline of the end of 2017.
