Hi, I got the exact same error type, freezing at 3% of disk formatting when I was trying to install on my 16GB SDHC card (USB, card reader). This was a fresh install of 2008.11 (b96). The only resolution I came up with was to install on internal SSD, which worked fine. Did you install on SDHC card, USB stick or internal SDD ?
I can only conclude that Solaris uses different (stripped) USB mass storage drivers during install compared to in normal use since I could access and format my SDHC after I had installed 2008.11 without problems.
