I know howto do this much. I need to know howto make manual changes and have
endian accept them and not overwrite them upon reboot or if I click save
within the web utility.

You have to enable SSH access in the web interface (system --> SSH
access). Then use your favorite client to connect to port 222
(important, as port 22 is default), log in as root, and you're on.
