Problem solved!!

I recompiled the kernel with ppp(oe|oa) as modules. I forgot to check
/var/log/messages and once I did I noticed that the pppoe script tries to
see if the module is loaded and if not load it... that failed since it was
static and the script exited. It works fine now!

Hope this will be of use for somebody in the future
