Hi Eric.

I have a 'main' uplink, which is a A-DSL line and a secondary uplink, which is
a UMTS modem. The secondary uplink is to take over (i.e. started) when the
main uplink fails to keep internet connection going. I do not do load
balancing.

main uplink was setup via 'system' => 'network configuration'. In my case efw
is connected to a DSL router which does the DSL, pppoe and nat stuff.

The settings under 'network' => 'Interfaces' => 'Uplink Editor' are
Type: Ethernet Static
Device: The eth interface, the dsl router is connected to
IP address & netmask : 192.168.114.1/24 (192.168.114.0 is a transfer net
between the dsl router and efw. 192.168.114.1 is the ip of the efw in that
net)
Default GW: 192.168.114.254 (that's the dsl router)
Prim DNS: our internal dns Sec DNS: 8.8.8.8 (that's google's dns)
Uplink is enabled and started on boot and managed
Now come the settings relevant to failover
'If this uplink fails activate' 'uplink1' (uplink1 is the umts uplink)
'check hosts': 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8 pings and should be reliable)
(no 'advanced settings')

Secondary uplink 'uplink1' (the name is assigned by efw and can not be
changed) is a Huawei UMTS usb modem. It runs out of the box on efw and
OpenSuse 11.x. Just make sure you reboot efw in case it gets unplugged from
usb. Otherwise the device assignment (ttyUSBx) will get messed up in efw and
the uplink won't work.
Settings are
Type: Analog/Umts Modem
Serial/USB Port: Usb Port 0
Modem Type: UMTS/HSDPA modem
Baudrate: 460800
Access point name: pinternet.interkom.de (given to me by my UMTS ISP)
AuthMethod: PAP or CHAP
Uplink is enabled and NOT started on boot and uplink is managed
'if this uplink fails....' is NOT checked
Check hosts: 8.8.8.8
(no 'advanced settings')

Problems are: efw will s.t. loose the UMTS modem from the usb bus and needs a
reboot. This might be are HW problem.
Failover gets triggered to easily. see above.

Hope this helps you.
Regards
......Volker
