You could look at something like Inprise' Application Server, which has a
complete CORBA OTS implementation.  It basically gives you the same
interface as JTS, but tied to CORBA rather than RMI, and without the
overhead of EJB.  You also get some failover and good thread pooling
capabilities with the Visibroker ORB.  As Ian points out in an earlier
response, however, you'll lose resource pooling and some other goodies.
