I agree with Rickard that EJB is not right for this job.
EJB is for transactional applications where the client initiates the
scenarios.
I think you should look into a JMS solution. Something like
Publish/Subscribe with support for server side "topics" or filters.
You should use a Java applet on the client to be able to receive
asynchronous messages from the server. I do not think Servlets
are ok for this because with HTTP you cannot keep an open
connection with the server.
We use Voyager from Objectspace. It is a Java ORB an it is free for most
uses.
